There are various anti aging creams in the market, and some are now specially formulated to target problem areas like dark under-eye circles, crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles and fine lines in the smile areas. One option is to get a diagnosis from a dermatologist then look for an anti aging cream most suitable to your skin.

The main function of the anti aging cream is to exfoliate, build collagen and nourish the skin. Exfoliation rids the skin of old skin cells that dull complexion. Creams specially formulated to eliminate wrinkles have ingredients that fill out creases by building collagen. Nourishing the skin with vitamins and antioxidants prevent loss of moisture and maintain the production of new skin cells.

It is the ingredients commonly found in anti aging creams that are said to maintain youthful skin.

Alpha hydroxy acid or AHA is used in chemical peels, but is also an ingredient in facial creams. They have the ability to repair and lock moisture in the skin and are claimed to have an exfoliating effect.

Retinol, the animal form of vitamin A, has been shown to increase skin cell turn over. It therefore clears uneven pigmentation and dark spots, giving a “luminous” effect to the skin.

Collagen is commonly added to a jar of anti aging cream to hydrate the skin while giving it a supple feeling. This ingredient is known to firm saggy skin.

Coenzyme Q10, an ingredient found to reduce sun damage that causes sunspots and burns, is particularly useful in treating photo aging.

Vitamins are now added to anti aging creams. Vitamin K is claimed to eliminate spider veins and dark eye circles. Vitamin E has been used in ointments for cuts and burns because of its fast-healing qualities—using it topically can reconstruct and smoothen skin. Vitamin C, as an antioxidant, is now proven to lessen the visibility of scars and encourage the production of collagen, improving the overall appearance and feel of the skin.

How creams work depend on the cream’s solubility and formulation. Oil-based creams usually leave deposits on the skin and have lasting protection. On the other hand, water-based creams often do not leave deposits on the skin, are absorbed more easily and does not have lasting protection from outside exposure. Some formulas in anti aging creams have added fragrance, which can sometimes irritate sensitive skin or cause allergic reactions.

Certain ingredients like Retinol may cause side effects (dryness) when used topically, although other ingredients like collagen have no known side effects.

Anti aging creams may seem like a miracle solution, but these are often recommended to delay the progression of aging skin in addition to proper diet and exercise.
